Phytochemicals from bryophytes: Structures and biological activity
نویسندگان
چکیده
Little attention has been paid to the bryophytes as sources for human diet despite presence of 23,000 species in world. Some mosses contain Vitamin B1, tocopherols, prostaglandin-like highly unsaturated fatty acids and phenolic compounds. On other hand, liverworts enantiomeric mono-, sesqui- diterpenoids similar those found vascular plants. Additionally, they possess bibenzyls, bis-bibenzyls polyketides, many them showing various bioactivity, such antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines, muscle relaxing, antioxidant others. In this paper, structures phytochemicals from their biological activities are discussed.

Antibacterial Activity of Extracts from Some Bryophytes
The antimicrobial activity of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of 11 Bryophyta species and 9 Marchantiophyta species collected in Latvia was tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Bacillus cereus. The extract of Lophocolea heterophylla inhibited the growth of B. cereus, but none of the tested extracts inhibited the growth of E. coli. 70% of bryophyte species demonstrated certa...
متن کاملPhytochemicals and biological studies of plants from the genus Balanophora
This review focus on the phytochemical progress and biological studies of plants from the genus Balanophora (Balanophoraceae) over the past few decades, in which most plants growth in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Oceania, and nearly 20 species ranged in southwest China. These dioeciously parasitic plants are normally growing on the roots of the evergreen broadleaf trees, especia...
متن کاملPhytochemicals from Mangifera pajang Kosterm and their biological activities
BACKGROUND Mangifera pajang Kosterm is a plant species from the mango family (Anacardiaceae). The fruits are edible and have been reported to have high antioxidant content. However, the detailed phytochemical studies of the plant have not been reported previously. This study investigates the phytochemicals and biological activities of different parts of Mangifera pajang. METHODS The plant sam...
متن کاملExtraction, characterization and biological studies of phytochemicals from Mammea suriga
The present work involves extraction of phytochemicals from the root bark of a well-known Indian traditional medicinal plant, viz. Mammea suriga, with various solvents and evaluation of their in vitro antimicrobial and antioxidant activities using standard methods. The phytochemical analysis indicates the presence of some interesting secondary metabolites like flavonoids, cardiac glycosides, al...
